Brasher set up the London Marathon in 1981 after enjoying a successful career as an athlete, winning the Olympic steeplechase gold in 1956 and helping pace Roger Banister to the first four minute mile.
Commented London Marathon chairman Jim Clarke: "Chris was one of those rare individuals that could make things happen. Without him the race would not have got off the ground. It is also worth remembering that the hundreds of millions of pounds raised for charity through the Marathon are directly attributable to him. He will be sorely missed by all of us at the Marathon."
The sports industry is in mourning following the news that Chris Brasher, president and co-founder of London Marathon Limited, has passed away at the age of 74.
