RAI's new Italian soccer deal

Tagged in &

Following months of negotiations, the Italian Soccer Federation has finally signed a TV rights deal with public broadcaster RAI.

RAI has put pen to paper on a four-year deal for coverage of the Italian national team's away fixtures.
RAI is thought to be paying a minimum of EUR1m ($1.07m) for the rights to each international away fixture played by the Italian team.
The negotiations between the federation and RAI were done directly without the use of an agency - a deliberate move aimed at cutting the commission costs incurred by both parties.
The broadcaster has endured a difficult period in its rights talks for Italian football in recent months. After lengthy discussion, RAI struck a deal for the free-to-air TV rights to the domestic Serie A league despite the ongoing talks delaying the start of the new Serie A season by two weeks.
In the finalised contract, the broadcaster is reportedly paying EUR94million ($100.9m) for the Serie A rights, some EUR62m ($66.6m) less than the amount RAI paid for the coverage in its previous deal.
