Players call for Zimbabwe switch

England's cricket team has called for its World Cup match against Zimbabwe to be moved amid growing fears over safety.

The players, issuing a statement through players' union the Professional Cricketers Association, said they were worried about the treatment of spectators at the game.
The issue of playing at Zimbabwe has sparked intense debate over the role of politics in sport, with the UK government opposed to the Mugabe-led regime in the country.
The ICC has previously said it is satisfied with security arrangements in the country, and ruled out switching games to the main host nation, South Africa.
However, it is believed to be keeping a close eye on the situation and will be keen not to let the issue shadow what is traditionally its showcase event for the one-day game.
Said the statement from the England players: "As concerns with the England team over the current political situation in Zimbabwe grow, the players today have requested an urgent review of their scheduled match against Zimbabwe in Harare on 13 February.
"Without doubt the issues have been weighing heavily on the players minds, taking into account moral, political and contractual aspects.
"The players are greatly concerned for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and especially for opposition supporters who might be targeted by police, using brute force.
"It is very important that no Zimbabwean or any other individual comes to any harm because of a cricket match in Harare."
