Tyson vs Lewis II - Talks on

Tagged in &

Another money-spinning bout between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis appears a step closer after Lewis' planned fight against Ukrainian Vitali Klitschko fell through.

Lewis has held talks with his TV partners, HBO, and agreed to the re-match.

It follows the collapse last week of talks with Klitschko's camp over a fight expected to have been staged on April 12.

When Tyson and Lewis met last year in Memphis in created the biggest revenues ever seen for a pay-per-view TV event. It also marked the first time HBO had worked together with Showtime, Tyson's network, in co-promoting a fight.

Said HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg: "We are looking forward to finalising plans, based on Tyson's performance next month."

Tyson returns to the ring for the first time since his defeat last year when he fights Clifford Etienne next month.

However, plans for the fight seem to further damage the credibility of a sport which clings to the pulling-power of Tyson despite the shamed former champion, who is now 36, being a shadow of the boxer which so enthralled millions when he first emerged onto the scene.

While the first fight drew a huge paying audience, fuelled by the prospect of seeing Tyson have another crack at the title, the second fight - which was always expected due to a clause in the first bout's contract - is unlikely to attract such massive figures.

With Lewis now 37, boxing is only too aware of the need to find some exciting new young blood in the heavyweight division to re-capture the waning interest of the public.
