IOC signs major freight deal

The IOC has signed a major supplier deal with a leading freight firm.

It has agreed a long-term strategic partnership with Schenker AG which makes the firm 'official supplier' to the IOC for freight forwarding and customs clearance services for the Games.

Schenker will work with the IOC and the organising committees for the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 (ATHOC), Turin 2006 (TOROC) and Beijing 2008 (BOCOG). The company will also assign a specialised team to focus on Olympic activities, including, in addition to the Games, providing services for all major IOC meetings and sessions.

Said IOC president Jacques Rogge: "The signing of this long-term agreement is a significant step in the IOC's drive to build relationships which ensure continuity from one edition of the Olympic Games to the next in areas of critical importance. By ensuring that the Games in Athens and beyond will benefit from the same expertise in these vital areas, our partnership with Schenker will play a key role in making the Games successful."

Schenker, which employs 35,000 people in 1,100 offices world-wide, with annual sales of 6.4 billion euros, has a strong relationship with the Olympic Movement, having previously worked with a number of National Olympic Committees, as well as being a sponsor of the Sydney 2000 and Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Games and working directly with the IOC for the past four years.
