Madrid to bid for 2012 Games

The Spanish Olympic Committee has designated Madrid as its choice to bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Spanish Olympic Committee chose Madrid over Seville by a vote of 157 to 103 with six abstentions, according to Jaime Echevarria, chairman of the committee.
The International Olympic Committee will pick the host in 2005 from as many as 10 cities, possibly including London, Rome, Paris and Moscow. New York was selected over San Francisco last November as the US candidate.
"Madrid will host the Olympic Games," said Ignacio Del Rio, chief executive of the city's Olympic committee. "We have the conditions needed to host them."
Del Rio estimated that 75 percent of the necessary infrastructure is already in place and that all of the construction will be completed by the end of 2007.
The benefits of hosting international sporting events is just one of the topics to be discussed at the industry's top conference to be staged in Madrid next year.

SportAccord takes place between May 12-16, 2003, with one day devoted to the topic of 'Hosting and Managing Sport Events'.
