Rogge in Athens site visit

Jacques Rogge, president of the IOC, touches down in Athens today for a three-day visit to see for himself progress made by organisers in preparation for the 2004 Games.

The Greek organising committee will be desperate to impress Rogge after previous IOC visits were followed by warnings from the IOC to speed up plans for the Games which get under way in just 19 months.
Rogge will be bought up-to-date on issues related to construction, transport and accommodation, as well as hold a meeting with Athens' newly-elected mayor Dora Bakovianni.
The IOC president will also be keen to discuss and confirm the venue for the soccer final and hold further talks to establish if plans for a dome design of the Olympic stadium will get the go-ahead as planned.
Tomorrow Rogge will be given a helicopter tour of venues before unveiling the 2004 Olympic torch on Wednesday.
The staging of major sporting events is one of the key topic areas to be discussed during the industry's leading event, SportAccord, taking place in Madrid between May 12-16.
