ICC delegation to visit Kenya

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is to send its safety and security delegation to Kenya next week to stage a two-day inspection of the security arrangements and preparations ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003.

The delegation, which arrives on Monday, will be reviewing security arrangements for teams scheduled to play in Kenya during the tournament, which is primarily staged in South Africa, to ensure that any real or perceived security concerns held by the countries playing in Kenya are identified and addressed.

Kenya is scheduled to play two ICC Cricket World Cup games at the Gymkhana Club (pictured) in Nairobi on February 21 against New Zealand and on February 24 against Sri Lanka.

The delegation will also be accompanied by security experts and representatives of commercial partners and the Anti-Corruption Unit.

Said ICC president, Malcolm Gray: “The ICC and its members are only concerned with cricket related issues.

“Questions have been raised about the safety and security of Kenya following the terrorist attacks on November 28 in Mombasa and it is important that we address those concerns.”

Meanwhile, it is looking increasingly more likely England will play in Zimbabwe during the tournament, despite its government's strong stance against the Mugabe-led regime.

English cricket officials have confirmed, however, players will walk off the field if necessary to avoid having to meet and greet Robert Mugabe.
