Earlier this month SBT negotiated a TV rights deal with the FPF, worth $3.2million, for coverage of 22 of the federation's league matches to be played in the first three months of next year.
TV Globo is the existing rights holder but had turned down a renewal deal with FPF after being asked to pay a similar figure to the $3.2m put up by SBT for only 12 games.br>
TV Globo is not claiming that the deal between the FPF and SBT is illegal as Globo was not offered the more favourable terms despite having the initial renewal option on the rights.
Globo has long held a monopoly on the domestic soccer coverage in Brazil holding the rights to the majority of the state leagues as well as the national league and the World Cup.
SBT executive Luiz Eduardo Borgeth remained defiant, stating: "We are breaking Globo's hegemony in sports. SBT has sent a clear message to advertisers - Globo will no longer have all rights."
Brazilian broadcaster TV Globo is suing rival network SBT and the Sao Paulo State Soccer Federation (FPF) over a rights deal for coverage of the federation's state league.
