Exclusive: BSkyB to shut Opta

Sportbusiness.com has learned that UK pay-TV operator BSkyB has announced its intention to close its wholly-owned statistics service Opta.

The Opta company was acquired by BSkyB in June 2000 and creates statistical performance indices for sports, including football, and distributes them to a range of media.
The high-profile service was widely used amongst the media, covering leagues from countries as geographically diverse as Japan and Denmark, as well as the more prominent properties such as the English Premier League.
