The 114th session meeting, which takes place on November 28-29, will see the IOC discuss the findings of a study on the sports on the programme at the Games and how the cost and complexity of hosting the Olympics can be reduced.
The study, undertaken by an IOC Commission, recommends that the sports of modern pentathlon, baseball and softball be dropped after the 2004 Games.
Ahead of next week's meeting, IOC president Jacques Rogge indicated that a downsizing of the Games met with his approval.
"We have some important issues to discuss and vote upon. After 21 years of remarkable expansion, the time has come for us to move from a period of continued growth to one of consolidation where we focus on our core business, the hosting of Olympic Games.
"The Olympics are the pinnacle of the world's sports events, bringing together top class athletes from around the world to compete, celebrate humanity and share Olympic values. By the hosting and staging of the Olympic Games, the IOC is also able to generate the finances to support sport throughout the world."
The future inclusion of three Olympic sports will come under review at the International Olympic Committee meeting in Mexico City, chaired by IOC president Jacques Rogge (pictured).
