Following a year which has seen the failure of his project to launch a dedicated TV channel for the league, Mitchell confirmed that he would end his four-year reign at the end of the month.
Mitchell, who made the annoucement following an SPL board meeting at Hampden Park, had been coming under increasing pressure in the face of falling attendances and commercial income and the much-stated desire of the top two clubs, Rangers and Celtic, to quit the league.
The departing chief executive stated that he will now concentrate on other business ventures.
Said Mitchell: "As someone who is passionate about Scottish football I wouldn't have missed the last four years for the world.
"It's been a tremendous rollercoaster ride during a time of unprecedented change for the game globally.
"I've dealt with many people with huge experience and great business acumen during my time in the game which has been tremendously rewarding."
SPL chairman Lex Gold will take over temporary control of the league until a replacement for Mitchell can be found.
As was widely expected, Roger Mitchell has resigned as the chief executive of the Scottish Premier League (SPL).
