In a statement, the club said: "The tax service has informed Ajax of its intention to levy an additional tax charge of EUR5.2m. The extra charge is linked to the transfers of Shota Arveladze and Michael Laudrup."R
Both players have since left the club.
The move follows a visit by tax inspectors last May, investigating allegations of irregular payments to Arveladze. The Dutch public prosecutors office said it suspected payments were presented as untaxed transfer compensation rather than as wages.
Dutch soccer Ajax has been handed a EUR5.2m ($5.24m) tax bill for two transfer deals agreed five years ago.
