Olympic vote set to be put on hold

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge has indicated that the vote to drop three sports from the Games could be postponed.

The IOC was scheduled to vote on proposals to drop baseball, softball and modern pentathlon from the Summer Olympics at the general assembly meeting in Mexico City on November 27-29.
However, Rogge stated yesterday that a decision on the downsizing of the Games through the elimination of the three sports could well be put on hold. Any successful vote to axe the three sports may now not apply until the 2012 Summer Games as opposed to 2008.
The IOC's programme commission had recommended that the three sports be dropped as of the 2008 Beijing Games.
In order for the vote to go through, a simple majority of the 120 members of the IOC would be required.
Rogge's announcement came after he unveiled the renewal of Visa's continued sponsorship of the Olympics until 2012. For a full interview with Visa president and CEO Malcolm Williamson, see the features section of today's sportbusiness.com
