Heineken Cup set for pay-TV?

Coverage of European rugby union’s Heineken Cup could move to a pay-TV platform according to the chief executive of the company in charge of the event.

In the November issue of SportBusiness International, Derek McGrath, chief executive of European Rugby Cup Limited (ERC) says, "we are now looking at all the options open to us before deciding what is best for the future, it could however be a mix of free-to-air and pay-TV."
The event is currently successfully televised across Europe on free-to-air terrestrial channels, including BBC in the UK, France Television and RTE in Ireland where last year's final between Leicester Tigers and Munster raked in 44 percent share of the audience.
"The terrestrial platform has been tremendous for the Heineken Cup over the past three years,” says McGrath justifying any future shift in broadcast strategy, "in a sense it fitted perfectly with the tournament's life cycle."
