ABC's coverage of the game, which saw Los Angeles Galaxy record a 1-0 extra-time win over New England Revolution, was watched in 1 percent of US television homes compared to last year's final which reached 1.1 percent.
The game was up against stiff sporting competition on other networks with the NFL and NASCAR both running alongside the MLS final. Despite this, next year's game will not be moving from a Sunday to a Saturday to help boost the ratings.
MLS spokesman Trey Fitzgerald stated: "It's tough going up against the NFL but I don't think ABC is going to bounce a premier college football game for the MLS Cup."
MLS has endured another season of falling ratings with the 25 regular-season games shown on ESPN dropping 14 percent from last year. The cable network attracted an average of 0.18 percent of its 84 million homes for the coverage.
Free-to-air network ABC's television audience for the finale of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season was down 9.1 percent on the previous year.
