Churchill Downs loses 2005 Breeders' Cup

Churchill Downs has lost the 2005 Breeders' Cup after race organisers said a clash with another nearby event would mean a shortage of hotel rooms.

The home of the Kentucky Derby has been scheduled to host the thoroughbred championships for a record sixth time. It will now host the 2006 event.

It last held the Breeders' Cup in 2000 (pictured).
D.G. Van Clief, president of the Breeders Cup, said the October 29 date clashed with the Future Farmers of America Convention in Louisville, leaving hotel rooms for one of the world's most prestigious horse races in short supply.
``Due to limited hotel accommodations, the Breeders' Cup cannot be held in Louisville in 2005,'' said Van Clief in a statement.
John R. Long, interim president of Churchill Downs said: "Given the hurdle placed before us in the effort to host the event in 2005, the Breeders' Cup made the proper decision. We look forward to 2006, when our construction will be complete and the Breeders' Cup will be held for the first time in a sparkling and renovated Churchill Downs, and to our track's return to the regular rotation of Breeders' Cup host sites."
The 2005 Breeders' Cup is now likely to be staged at Belmont Park - venue for the 2001 race.
This year's Breeders' Cup takes place next weekend at Arlington Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois, for the first time.
The 2003 races are set for Santa Anita in Arcadia, California, and the 2004 event at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas.
