Turner Sports grabs the Open

US cable broadcaster Turner Sports has won the TV rights for the British Open golf championship in a new seven-year deal.

Turner, which will screen the coverage on its TNT network, paid in the region of $30million (EUR30.7m) for the long-term contract, beating of the challenge of ESPN which currently holds the broadcast rights to the major tournament.
TNT will begin broadcasting the Open as of next year's tournament, to be held between July 17-20, showing 28 hours of coverage from the event of whihc 22 will be live. Whereas ESPN only broadcast action from the Thursday and Friday of the Open, TNT will add two hours each on Saturday and Sunday morning to the coverage.
The free-to-air rights for the Open remain with ESPN's sibling network ABC.
Said TNT president Mark Lazarus: "We're looking for tentpole sports events to bolster TNT's schedule. We came to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club with a different philosophy and different promotional angle. We attempt to forge marketing relationships.
"It's something we've done very successfully with the PGA Championship. These now are the only two tournaments with early morning coverage by the cable partner."
Turner Sports' contract for the Open includes video-on-demand rights as well as other interactive TV and online radio opportunities.
