France to stage Confederations Cup

France has been chosen above Australia, the US, Switzerland and South Africa to host the Confederations Cup in 2003, making it the first European country to host the event.

The biennial soccer event, which will take place between June 18-29, will include six regional soccer champions (Colombia, Cameroon, Japan and New Zealand) along with the World Cup champion (Brazil) and the host country (France).

France will use its 1998 World Cup stadia in Paris, Lyon and Saint- Etienne.
