SA fails to find broadcaster

Soccer Australia (SA) has failed to find a new broadcasting partner in time for the start of the National Soccer League (NSL).

Talks between SA, the NSL executive, broadcast rights holder Channel Seven and prospective pay-TV partner Foxtel have failed to come up with a solution to televising this season's matches.

“There have been discussions [with] Fox Sports about their programming and production timetables for coverage of NSL games,” said NSL executive chairman Remo Nogarotto. “Clearly it’s not going to be this weekend – it’s going to be a matter of weeks.

“We are better off getting these arrangements right and tight from the outset rather than worrying about no coverage from round one.”

Seven Network still has five years left on its contract with SA but because of the collapse of its pay-TV arm C7 Sport, the network cannot guarantee enough television coverage of NSL matches. It has therefore offered about A$8m ($4.4m/B4.5m) in compensation in return for the broadcasting rights to all matches played by Australia’s national team the Socceroos for the next ten years.
