Ronaldo pays up for sponsor shortfall

Brazilian soccer ace Ronaldo reportedly paid $5million (EUR5.1m) of his own money to compensate Inter Milan for lost sponsorship revenue in a bid to secure his $48m (EUR48.95m) transfer to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The move is a clear demonstration that clubs will expect players to take responsibility for their decisions to move clubs if they are sufficiently high-profile enough for their departure to impact hard on sponsorship deals.

Ronaldo, part of Brazil's winning World Cup team, also took a pay cut to make the move. His wages, before tax, are estimated to be around £6.3m ($9.83m/EUR10.02m).
