Exclusive: KirchSport MBO?

KirchSport could be on the verge of a management buyout bid (MBO) - spearheaded by former adidas chief Robert Louis-Dreyfus - sportbusiness.com can exclusively confirm.

Dreyfus, who turned around the fortunes of the German sportswear giant as CEO and then chairman, is believed to be the preferred choice of soccer governing body FIFA. KirchSport owns the global TV rights to both the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

The Dreyfus deal - which would see the existing team and management structure within KirchSport remain as it is - appeals to FIFA as it ensures it continues to work with a team experienced in its most valuable property.

Despite media suggestions Kirch had struggled to sell the World Cup rights for both this summer's tournament and the 2006 event in Germany, Kirch and FIFA consider the sales a success.

However, Dreyfus faces a rival bid, believed to be fronted by Leo Kirch and former Kirch managing director Dieter Hahn.
