Sports exempted from tobacco ban

Formula One and football have been temporarily exempted from the Malaysian government's ban on tobacco advertising and sponsorship.

Despite the increase in the number of young smokers in Malaysia, Dunhill is still allowed to sponsor the country's Premier League until 2004.

Tobacco sponsorship at the Malaysian Grand Prix, which is held annually at the Sepang International Circuit, is likely to be banned in 2006 when motor sport's governing body the Federation International de l'Automobile (FIA) will enforce a worldwide ban.
