Sunday's World Basketball Championships final between Yugoslavia and Argentina drew a television audience of just one million people - about six million less than for the Agassi v Sampras US Open tennis final.
NBC, the network which broadcast the final, blamed the early exit of the USA basketball team for the low ratings.
Overall, the WBC, which was hosted in baseball-mad Indianapolis, was a complete failure and a far cry from the days when America dominated the competition a decade ago.
