Baseball, softball set for Games axe?

Golf and rugby may find themselves Olympic sports after recommendations from an IOC commission.

And it could be the end of Olympic recognition for baseball and softball.

A 14-member executive board will consider the findings of the report today, which also suggested Greco-Roman wrestling, the three-day event in equestrianism, the racewalking event in track and field and the modern pentathlon are all cut out of the Olympic programme.

The report, led by IOC president Jacques Rogge, is designed to reduce the size of the Games - a commitment he made prior to his election success.

Said Rogge: "We still want to have 10,500 athletes, 28 sports, 300 events. We want to see if the composition of the programme should be different."

Any changes in the line-up of sports would be implemented by the Beijing Games in 2008.
