Vancouver in line for 2010 Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has included Vancouver in its short-list of cities hoping to stage the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The Canadian city is widely tipped to go head-to- head with Austrian city Salzburg when two more bidding cities.

Pyeongchgang in South Korea and Bern in Switzerland also survived yesterday's cut. Applications from Sarajevo, Jaca, Harbin and Andorra La Vella were rejected by the IOC.

If Vancouver is eventually chosen to host the event it is likely to hinder the US's hopes of staging the Summer Olympic Games in 2012 because the IOC is unlikely to allow both events to be held in North America.

The final decision on the host city for the XXI Winter Games will be made in Prague in July 2003.
