League chief's golden handshake

David Burns, the chief executive of English soccer's Football League, who quit following the cash debacle that was the ITV Digital collapse, received a lucrative £200,000 ($306,000/EUR312,200) pay-off, according to reports.

The UK's Daily Mail reports Burns - who was widely criticised for his handling of the doomed deal - had the deal sanctioned by then League chairman Keith Harris, who also quit after the League's TV deal collapsed.

The League had signed a £315million ($482m/EUR491m) TV deal with the ITV Digital platform, but when ITV Digital collapsed, it was ruled owners Carlton and Granada were not liable to pay compensation to cover the remaining £178m ($272.39m/EUR277.87m) owed to the League.

It left clubs facing a massive cash shortfall and a new deal signed with Sky saw exclusive live rights sold for just £95m ($145.38m/EUR148.3m) over four years.

Both Burns and Harris resigned over the affair.
