ITV to sign with League?

The English Football League - heavily-hit by the collapse of the ITV Digital pay platform - is set to sign with the UK commercial network again, according to reports.

Soccernet.com says the Football League is close to signing a £6million ($9.23m/EUR9.36m), three-year deal with ITV for a terrestrial highlights package.

When ITV Digital collapsed, it left the League with a £178m ($273.84m/EUR277.73m) shortfall on the three-year, £315m ($491.5m/EUR484.6m) deal.

Facing the prospect of having no TV coverage at all, and with clubs facing financial hardship, League chiefs signed with former broadcast partner Sky in a deal worth just a fraction - £95m ($148m/EUR146.15m) over four years - of the ITV Digital deal.

According to the report, ITV has confirmed it is in talks, although it is believed both the BBC and Channel 5 are also examining the property.

With the new season now under way, a deal is expected to be secured within ten days.
