Cricket to boost Telstra Stadium

The underused 80,000-seater Telstra Stadium, formerly knows as Stadium Australia, in Sydney could become a regular venue for one-day cricket internationals.

Although the Australian Cricket Board is contracted to play its Sydney fixtures at the Sydney Cricket Ground until the 2004-05 season, a senior cricket official has said that use of the former Olympic venue for one-day internationals was "inevitable".
"International cricket will come here sooner rather than later because how can you say no to 80,000 crowds and the income that produces for the game," said New South Wales cricket chief executive Dave Gilbert.
New South Wales are scheduled to play South Australia in a domestic trophy match at the stadium in February 2003, however Gilbert stressed that the Sydney Cricket Ground would remain the main venue for State competition.
The stadium has been the subject of controversy ever since the end of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and has been dubbed by some critics as a "white elephant".
Telstra Stadium recently invested Aus $80m($42.2m/EUR43.7m) to allow it to stage Aussie Rules football games.
It has also been named as the major venue for the Rugby World Cup in 2003.
