Discussions about including rugby union at the Olympics have been ongoing for several years and continued last week in Manchester at the Commonwealth Games.
While the International Rugby Board (IRB) is keen to include rugby sevens as an Olympic sport, the IOC would rather have a 15-a-side competition.
But the two sides are now looking to compromise with each other.
"We've never ruled out a 15-a-side, but there's a number of reasons why sevens would be a great Olympic event," IRB spokesman Chris Rea, told The Sunday Times
