Football League boss 'to quit'

David Burns, the English Football League's chief executive, has reportedly agreed to step down from his job after the League lost its crucial court battle with ITV Digital's backers Carlton and Granada.

It is widely expected that Burns will resign tomorrow at a meeting of the League's board if he has lost their support.

The High Court decided last week that Carlton and Granada were not obliged to pay the £178m outstanding to the League's 72 football clubs.

The judge blamed the Football League for failing to ask for written guarantees from Carlton and Granada that the money would be paid in the event that ITV Digital went bankrupt.

Burns has not been blamed by the clubs for losing the court case but also for agreeing to a new media rights deal with BSkyB for just £95m over the next four year.

The League is now facing a huge financial crisis just one week before the start of the 2002/3 football season.

Two senior executives at Granada, Steve Morrison (chief executive) and Charles Allen (chairman) are also expected to come under pressure from investors to resign.
