MLB contraction ruling 'today'

Major League Baseball's (MLB) decision on whether or not to fold two low-revenue clubs from the 2003 season will be made later today, according to the sport's leading labour negotiator Rob Manfred.

The debate about whether or not to remove two clubs has been ongoing for the last nine months and the Montreal Expos has emerged as the most likely team to go first because it attracted the least spectators to its home games last season.

Meanwhile, negotiations for a new labour contract have continued this week including a one-hour meeting on the minimum salary for players.

The owners are proposing a minimal salary of $285,000 while the players' union wants this figure raised to $300,000.

The union is threatening to strike if owners declare a deadlock in talks and fail to introduce new work rules.
