Scottish clubs 'to quit'

Tagged in

The 10 non-Old Firm Scottish Premier League (SPL) clubs have announced that they intend to resign from the League within 24 hours after failing to agree voting structure changes with Celtic and Rangers.

The clubs, which have to give two years' notice before leaving, threatened to break away in April when the two Glasgow powers vetoed the formation of a television channel. They retracted the threat, and all 12 teams today agreed to a new television agreement with the BBC.

"There is a conciliatory attitude that will hopefully permeate through," Motherwell administrator Bryan Jackson told the SPL's official website. "But as there has been no progress, that is the reason why there are going to be resignations."

Rangers and Celtic, by far the most dominant clubs in the league, oppose plans to change the existing 11-1 majority needed to pass decisions. The others want an 8-4 voting system to reduce the so-called Old Firm's power.
