In the three months ended June 30, BSkyb added 214,000 new customers to post a total of 6.1 million subscribers.
Said chief executive Tony Ball: "With 6.1 million subscribers and 11 percent growth in revenue per subscriber to £347 ($544), we are on track to meet our targets of 7 million subscribers and £400 ($627) ARPU (average revenue per user)."
Analysts had expected the company to add 150-170,000 customers but the figures showed a much higher than forecast benefit from the collapse of ITV Digital.
In terms of sports programming, Sky Sports Premiership audiences increased season-on-season and the title decider between Manchester United and Arsenal was watched by the largest in-home audience for three years.
Sky said the new season will see the return of the Nationwide League and Worthington Cup to Sky Sports, following a four year agreement with The Football League.
The Ryder Cup will be shown exclusively live on Sky Sports in September.
After goodwill and exceptional items - mainly reflecting the write-off of its investment in Germany's KirchPayTV - the loss before tax for the year was £1,276 billion($2,002bn).
