Soccer's 'big five' prosper

The aggregated income of all soccer clubs in top European divisions broke the £4billion (EUR6.6bn/$6.1bn) barrier for the 2000/2001 season, according to the Deloitte & Touche Annual Review of Football Finance

The 'big five' leagues (England, Italy, Spain, Germany and France) generated 78 percent of European top division income, the report said, with the English Premiership clubs comprising the largest individual share at 24 percent.

"The English Premiership is the undoubted financial champion of Europe - generating the highest income and making the highest operating profits," said Gerry Boon, head of Deloitte & Touche Sport, the Sports Business Consultancy.

Premiership operating profits jumped up 51 percent to £81m (EUR134/$123.1m) in the 2000/2001 season. Of the other 'big five' top divisions, the German Bundesliga 1 is the only league consistently making operating profits - EUR87 million ($85.5m) in 2000/01.
