Beijing goes hi-tech

The organisers of the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 have opened a science and technology committee to meet the technological requirements of the Games.

The committee combines 10 central government departments and top scientific research institutions including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Lin Wenyi, vice-mayor of Beijing and the president of the new committee said it would provide an "all-round technological consultancy" for the Beijing Olympic Committee, and would cover the construction of Olympic stadiums, organisation of the matches, opening and closing ceremonies, security checks and the establishment of information networks for the Games.

Beijing's mayor Liu Qi also urged technological innovation by the country's scientists and engineers to help ensure a "green, high-tech and people's Olympiad".
