World Cup's $53m prize pot

The total prize money at this year's soccer World Cup - which kicks-off tomorrow - will be almost $53m (EUR56m), with the winners scooping $1.6m (EUR1.7m) and the runners-up netting $1.4m (EUR1.5m).

And the cash bonanza does not end there - players of many teams have agreed big money payouts dependent on success in the tournament.

England tops the bonus league, with each player being promised $337,000 (EUR360,000) if the team
wins the competition.

But the Argentinean team - England's opponents in the first group stage of the competition - will be denied any bonuses because of the economic crisis facing the country.

A new payment system has been introduced by FIFA for this year's tournament and puts emphasis on the success of the teams at the tournament. When compared with France 98, this increases the
overall amount distributed by 51 percent.
