Open nets big return

Hosting tennis' Australian Open this year has netted the economy of Victoria a healthy AUS$189m ($104.37m / EUR113.35m), according to the latest research.

According to the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research (NIEIR), the figure represents a 37 percent on the 1999 tournament - the last time a similar study was conducted - and an 83 percent increase on 1997.

"These figures are a reflection of the growing importance of the Australian Open as one of the world's top international events," said Tennis Australia president, Geoff Pollard.
