IAAF set date for naming of 2005 host

The venue for the 2005 World Athletics Championship will be unveiled on 14 April by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in Nairobi.

The six bidding cities are Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Helsinki, Moscow and Rome.

It comes after London - the original host of the 2005 event - had to pull out of staging the event when the venue they had planned failed to get off the ground, leaving sport chiefs red-faced.

Despite efforts to move it elsewhere in the UK, the IAAF opted to withdraw the hosting rights and look for a new city.

The voting procedure today requires the winning candidate to obtain an absolute majority which, should all 27 council members be present, means 14 votes. If there is no absolute majority in the first round, the city with the fewest votes drops out of the contest and the rounds of voting continue until an absolute majority is secured.
