Athens' race against time

Tagged in

Denis Oswald, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) overseer, has said that there are still numerous problems to be solved before Athens hosts the Olympic Games in 900 days time.

He said that the city is close to alleviating an accommodation shortage for officials but has yet to find enough room for spectators.

"It is vital that all the elements that constitute the lifeblood of the country work together, putting aside any quarrels and differences of opinion and co-operate in a co-ordinated matter," he told a business conference on the 2004 Games.

"In my view, this is a civic duty and obligation toward the nation.

"I cannot hide the fact that the sports world still has a number of concerns. These concerns have nothing to do with Greece's ability to stage the Olympic Games, rather the difficulty of doing so in the limited amount of time left before August 2004.

"Indeed, your country did not get down to work immediately after obtaining the games."

Oswald added that Athens will be "racing against time right up to August 2004".
