UEFA considers format to replace "friendlies"

UEFA will float the idea of a new national team competition to replace the "friendly" internationals guaranteed in the new FIFA calendar, UEFA spokesperson Mike Lee has told sportbusiness.com.

Appearing at the 7th annual SMi European Football Finance conference in Madrid, Lee said that a new competition proposal was likely to go before the UEFA Executive Committee in the summer.

Lee said that UEFA had noted "some enthusiasm" among the national associations for a "second national team competition", which could be played on a "Davies Cup [style] round-robin, league or knockout multi-season basis."

Not all associations, however, are likely to back the idea. The English FA, for example, is thought to have made over £6million ($8.5m/EUR9.8m) from the recent friendly international against Sweden at Old Trafford in Manchester.
