World Cup comes to Argentine TV

Financially-stricken Argentina has finally secured a TV rights deal for the 2002 World Cup following months of negotiations.

Free-to-air broadcaster America 2 has bought the rights to a minimum of 20 games from this summer's soccer World Cup tournament including the opening match, semi-finals, final and all of Argentina's games.

Although financial details of the agreement are not known, DirecTV Latin America - the pay-TV platform which bought up the World Cup rights in the region excluding Brazil to sub-license to individual broadcasters in the various territories - has come under increasing pressure in recent months to finalise a deal in Argentina.

The recession-hit country is in financial disarray at present and there had been much criticism that the lucrative World Cup rights had not been sold widely enough.

Despite finalising the deal with America 2, DirecTV Latin America said in a prepared statement that it is "continuing to negotiate with other Argentine channels to guarantee the most complete televised coverage of the most important games" of the event.
