"In 36 months, we're going to have to have one series," Penske said on Saturday, just prior to the beginning of the IRL season in Miami, and just a few days before CART releases its
full-year results.
"You're going to take this year, you're going to take a transition year and one more year and then you're going to see what happens. It's going to be the fate," Penske added.
Many motor sport experts have indicated that a merger between CART and IRL is the only solution to salvage both series from a financial crisis.
Rumours of a CART series/Indy Racing League (IRL) merger were rife a few weeks ago after CART announced that its chassis regulation would be the same as those of its rival from 2003.
