Roland Garros gets new stand

The C stand on the centre court at Roland Garros will be torn down and rebuilt after next year's French Open, the French tennis federation (FFT) has said.

(Reuters) "At a cost of EUR19million ($16.44m), [the work] involves the demolition of this [C] stand after the end of the 2003 tournament and its reconstruction for the 2004 French Open," the FFT said.
The project was put forward by FFT president Christian Bimes and the motion carried unanimously by the FFT board at its annual general meeting on Saturday.
The work will bring the stand - the only one not altered since the centre court was built - in line with modern security regulations and add 800 square metres of seating space.
A project to extend Roland Garros onto 6.25 hectares of adjacent land was also put forward, but is still under consideration by the local authorities and Paris city hall.
The project would see the construction of a second centre court with a moveable roof, seating for 12,300 spectators and six more clay courts - two of which would be covered.
