Investigation triggers Wembley share slump

Shares in UK entertainment group, Wembley Plc, slumped by 13 percent this morning following reports of a US investigation into alleged "improper and illegal" payments by the company.

According to The Times newspaper, Wembley is under investigation by the District Attorney of Rhode Island over payments to a US lawyer at
Lincoln Park, Wembley's gambling complex in Rhode Island.

The inquiry follows accusations made by two former senior executives at the US subsidiary, who claimed they were dismissed for refusing to take part in an "improper and illegal" scheme to pay money to an unnamed attorney over six years.

Wembley, which owns greyhound tracks in the UK and the US, as well as the Keith Prowse corporate hospitality agency and an internet betting site, refutes the claims.

Any individual prosecutions could result in the revocation of Wembley's gaming license in Rhode Island.
