The 2002 Winter Olympic Games are the most security conscious Games ever staged, the inevitable consequences of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11.

Metal detectors, air space restrictions, patrols by fighter planes and enough FBI agents, secret service men and national guard troopers to out number the athletes by 4 to 1, have led to a security bill of more than $300m (EUR344m).
