German soccer in Kirch doubt

KirchPayTV's existing deal with the German football league is in danger after an analyst predicted the department's collapse by September unless parent company the Kirch Group can perform a miraculous financial about-turn.

According to media analysts at investment bank WestLB Panmure, Kirch's pay-TV operation Premiere is losing $1.5m a day.

It has in place a deal with the German league worth close to $500m running until 2004.
"We believe that Premiere will never break even with programming costs running this high," said WestLB.
"Given the substantial minimum licence fee commitments for the next few years, Premiere will only be successful if these programming supply agreements are renegotiated downwards."
