French block radio rights sale

Tagged in

The French government has stated that it will try to block any move by the French National Soccer League (LNF) to sell the rights to cover domestic matches on radio and in the press.

"As for coverage rights for radio and the written press, myself and Sports Minister Marie-George Buffet, but also the whole of the government are determined not to accept them," French Culture and Communication minister Catherine Tasca told French parliament.

Tasca was reacting to the announcement earlier this month by the LNF that it was planning to sell the radio broadcasting rights for the French first division.

LNF president Gerard Bourgoin even said last week that the written press should one day be forced to pay to cover football.

"They want to make money with everything, it's not possible. The right to information must be respected," Buffet said. "We are determined to make sure that the right of access to information from stadiums is respected. I think personally that in the future a bill should be passed at national and European level to regulate that market."
