Italian investors may save Prost

The cash-strapped Prost Formula One team has reportedly received an offer from a group of Italian investors.

According to La Tribune newspaper, former Ferrari team director Cesare Fiorio is leading the Italian bid. News of the offer comes a week after the media speculated that Prost had been approached by a French consortium willing to inject $40m (EUR44.7m) into the team.

Last month Prost said he needed about $68.2m (EUR76m) to compete next season or face bankruptcy. The team had until Tuesday night to find fresh finance and La Tribune says the Italian offer came just hours before the deadline.

"We transmitted the dossiers to the tribunal in Versailles on Tuesday night and the court is currently studying the propositions," said a Prost spokeswoman. "We may get a decision by the end of the week, or it could run into next week. There is no fixed timetable."
