Magpies explore links Down Under

Freddy Shepherd, chairman of English Premier League soccer club Newcastle, is to meet with representatives from the club’s Australian namesake to discuss the possibility of future links.

Shepherd has reportedly been travelling throughout the southeast Asian region investigating possible links with a number of clubs.

Australia’s Newcastle United has indicated it would not welcome an ownership bid, but a number of other issues will be discussed at the informal meeting later this week.

“We’ll be talking about a whole range of opportunities from marketing to supporter group liaisons to the condition of the current national soccer league,” said Jock Graham, manager of the Australian club. “I would see Friday’s as the first of a number of meetings between the clubs.”
